No Mess Play-doh Color Wheel

I LOVE teaching kids about the color wheel and mixing colors. Little ones get especially excited when they see two colors mixed together to make a new color. It’s like magic! Color mixing with paint can get messy, especially with preschoolers, who tend to mix too much of one color into another and then can’t balance it out. So, let’s use play-doh instead! It is a good sensory exercise as well, because they have to squish and knead to mix the colors. It works so well though! And the best part is, NO MESS!

All you need is play-doh in the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue.

Start with a ball of each color play-doh.

When I first did this with my 4 year old, I asked him “what color do you think red and yellow will make”? And then we pulled off a piece from red and yellow and stuck them together and started kneading with our fingers.

As a reminder:

Red + Yellow = Orange

Yellow + Blue = Green

Blue + Red = Purple

Start with an equal amount of red and yellow, then add more yellow if the mixture is still looking too red.
Next, mix some yellow with blue, and some blue with red…
Lay the new colors in between the two colors that created it to make a color wheel.

Primary colors: red, yellow, blue
Secondary colors: orange, green, purple

Kids usually ask me, what about pink? If you have white play-doh, use that to mix with red to make pink, and show how the other colors can become lighter!

Have fun making colors!
