Am I the only one that saves baby jars after I’ve fed the food to the baby? No? Great! Let me show you how to turn them into tea light candle lanterns for Halloween!

What you will need:

  1. Baby jars (washed and label peeled)
  2. White tissue paper
  3. Black construction paper
  4. Mod Podge (purchase here )
  5. Paintbrush
  6. Scissors
  7. LED tea light candles (purchase here )
I used gloss finish Mod Podge, but that is a personal preference.

I have saved sooo many of these jars over the past year. I believe these were the Beech Nut brand. They are the taller kind as opposed to the Gerber ones, and they make a nice ghost shape. (The Gerber ones would make a nice pumpkin shape). If you don’t have baby jars laying around (don’t worry, this makes you a normal person!), I have heard that baby jars can be found on Ebay in bulk.

First, peel off the label but don’t worry about the glue residue. It will get covered up anyway.

Next, cut up your white tissue paper into squares. Ours were about 2 in. squares. Feel free to rip them by hand for an uneven look. No need for perfection!

When working with Mod Podge, you want to brush on a layer of it onto the glass first, then place a piece of tissue paper over the glue, and brush on another layer of Mod Podge over the tissue paper to seal it and brush out any bumps or air bubbles. Make sure to cover it all and have no edges or corners of the tissue paper sticking up.

Keep adding tissue paper until your whole jar is covered. Overlapping the pieces of tissue paper is ok and so it layering pieces over already glued on pieces. My daughter layered several pieces over each other and the tea light still shines through.

For the eyes and mouth, we drew the shapes onto black construction paper with a white colored pencil and cut them out. Use Mod Podge to attach and brush over.

I had a helper put in the tea lights.
Hanging out on the window sill.

Happy crafting!
